Steve O’Donnell Named NASCAR CEO, Vows to Revive Sport’s Roots

NASCAR Welcomes a New Era as Steve O’Donnell Steps In as CEO

TALLADEGA, Ala. — In a bid to reignite the excitement and tradition that once defined NASCAR, Steve O’Donnell has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the racing organization. During his introduction at Talladega Superspeedway, O’Donnell expressed his eagerness to bring back the “badass American sport” spirit to NASCAR.

O’Donnell’s appointment marks a significant shift in the leadership of NASCAR. For the first time, the CEO role will be held by someone outside the France family. Jim France, who remains NASCAR’s chairman, has stepped down from the CEO position but retains his majority ownership stake.

O’Donnell is no stranger to NASCAR, having spent over three decades shaping its marketing and competition sectors. His promotion to CEO follows his rise to the presidency in March 2025, highlighting his integral role within the organization.

Bill France Sr., who founded NASCAR in 1948, established a tradition of family leadership which continues with Ben Kennedy, great-nephew of Bill France Sr., being promoted to chief operating officer. Jim France remarked on the transition, stating, “They’re going to take this thing even further.”

O’Donnell takes the helm after a turbulent period in which NASCAR faced an antitrust lawsuit related to revenue-sharing agreements. The suit, led by Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, was settled in December, granting NASCAR teams the permanent charters they sought.

Jim France’s testimony during the lawsuit was marked by some difficulty, as he struggled to recall various topics. Additionally, NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps resigned after controversial texts emerged during the trial.

Looking forward, O’Donnell’s vision for NASCAR’s future includes reuniting the industry, engaging all stakeholders, including fans, and addressing challenges with prompt action. “It’s what we have to do each and every day,” he stated. “We’ve got to showcase that.”
