In the aftermath of a volatile weekend, residents of the Upper Midwest are now in recovery mode following a series of devastating tornadoes and severe weather events. Numerous homes were damaged, and tens of thousands were left without electricity as the storms swept across the region.
Widespread Tornado Activity
According to the National Weather Service, “numerous” powerful storms impacted areas of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri last Friday. The NWS Quad Cities IA/IL office confirmed at least 66 tornado reports across multiple states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
Impact on Local Communities
In Minnesota’s Marion Township, a tornado caused significant damage to approximately 30 homes, with about a dozen suffering major destruction. Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office noted that Stewartville also experienced damage to at least 20 homes. A temporary shelter has been set up in Rochester for displaced residents, as reported by MPR News.
McClean County in Illinois declared a disaster emergency due to severe storms in Bloomington. Officials assured that, “at this time, no injuries have been reported, and emergency response agencies remain actively engaged to ensure public safety and continuity of essential services,” as per a statement.
Severe Damage in Illinois and Wisconsin
In Illinois, the village of Lena endured substantial destruction from an EF-2 tornado, with homes and structures damaged, trees uprooted, and power lines downed. The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the blocked roads due to debris in a statement. Despite the destruction, Chief Deputy Andy Schroeder confirmed to NPR that no serious injuries were reported.
Power outages affected over 43,000 customers in Illinois, but most had their service restored by Saturday night, according to utility company ComEd. Meanwhile, Wisconsin faced numerous tornadoes, with the NWS office in La Crosse issuing 26 warnings on Friday, the most in a single day since the office’s inception in 1995.
Continued Recovery Efforts
In Marathon County, Wisconsin, a tornado decimated 75 homes in one town, as Ringle Fire Chief Chris Kielman reported to Wisconsin Public Radio. Kielman remarked, “It took out a whole residential area.” The American Red Cross of Wisconsin has been actively providing meals, shelter, and support to storm victims, as indicated in a statement.
As communities continue to deal with the aftermath, efforts are underway to address the severe weather and tornadoes that have plagued the region, including recent flooding in some areas.
