Victor Marx’s Controversial Stance on Abortion Rights in Colorado

Republican gubernatorial candidate Victor Marx has stirred controversy with his strong opposition to abortion rights, using inflammatory language in public statements.

Marx, a pastor since 2003, has been active in anti-abortion advocacy for nearly two decades. He supports a complete ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or maternal health.

Colorado’s lack of restrictions on abortion timing has made it a refuge for women from states with stricter laws. In 2024, a significant 62% of voters in Colorado supported a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive rights.

In August, Marx described abortion as “occultic activities” in a Facebook post, accusing residents of engaging in these practices openly.

Marx stated, “This state, they kill babies… Wholesale slaughter. A girl teenager can drive in our state, get an abortion, you have to pay for it. She can drive back over that line and get to her parents and never know. Our state needs to repent.”

George Markert, Marx’s running mate, expressed opposition to the state’s constitutional amendment on reproductive rights during an interview with FOX31 in Denver, pledging to work towards its repeal.

Marx often speaks about abortion with religious connotations. In a 2022 podcast with Charlie Kirk, he referred to abortion as “evil” and a “manifestation of darkness.”

Through his podcast, Marx discusses Christianity and politics. A 2023 episode featured his view of abortion rates among Black people as a “self-inflicted genocide,” claiming it was used as “a horrific form of birth control.”

Marx told Rumble in 2023 that abortion contributes to the prevalence of “angry women.”

“People wonder why so many angry women and Karens are out there,” Marx commented. “When you kill your own child, you know, your soul knows it, your body knows it. And say what you want, it wounds you.”

A 2007 profile in the Waco Tribune-Herald highlighted Marx’s past work with a Christian nonprofit and his role as an assistant to James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, a group opposing abortion rights.

Focus on the Family is known for its opposition to LGBTQ rights, labeled as “Satanic,” and is classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. More information can be found here.

In response to Marx’s views, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, along with Cobalt and COLOR, held a joint event in August to denounce his rhetoric.

Claudia Pérez, the Director of Public Affairs for the group, stated, “He has repeatedly used language designed to dehumanize, shame, and stigmatize people seeking care. He is part of a movement that believes government should have the power to override deeply personal medical decisions.”

Marx faces Democratic opponent Phil Weiser, the state’s Attorney General, who has vowed to safeguard reproductive rights if elected.
