DOJ Subpoenas Minnesota Leaders Amid Trump Immigration Crackdown

Federal Subpoenas Target Minnesota Leaders Amid Immigration Enforcement Dispute

The U.S. Justice Department has intensified its investigation into Minnesota’s handling of federal immigration enforcement with a series of grand jury subpoenas. This move, involving high-profile officials such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz, signals an escalating conflict between state authorities and the federal government.

Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison and St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her are also among those subpoenaed. While NPR has yet to confirm if more leaders have received similar notices, this federal action has sparked concerns over potential political motives.

Mayor Frey, scheduled for a court appearance on February 3, voiced his concerns, stating, “We shouldn’t have to live in a country where people fear that federal law enforcement will be used to play politics or crack down on local voices they disagree with.”

On Tuesday, U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, alongside ICE leader Marcos Charles, defended their operations against what they described as politically motivated attacks from Minnesota’s leaders. “They’re everyday people doing a very hard job,” Charles emphasized.

Compounding the tension, Minnesota has witnessed protests following the shooting of Renee Macklin Good by an ICE agent. This incident has fueled criticism of ICE’s methods and the federal government’s response.

President Trump addressed these events, acknowledging potential errors by ICE but emphasizing the challenges faced by immigration officers: “They’re going to make mistakes. Sometimes ICE is going to be too rough with somebody, or, you know, they’re dealing with rough people,” he stated.

Attorney General Ellison, whose office has sued the Trump administration over ICE’s tactics, condemned the subpoenas as retaliatory. “Let’s be clear about why this is happening: Donald Trump is coming after the people of Minnesota and I’m standing in his way,” Ellison declared.

As tensions mount, the White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the DOJ’s recent actions.
