Trump Appoints Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence

Trump Appoints Housing Official as Acting Director of National Intelligence

In a surprising move, President Trump has announced Bill Pulte as the new acting director of national intelligence, succeeding Tulsi Gabbard. Pulte, who currently leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and serves as chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is set to take on this significant role despite lacking a background in intelligence.

Pulte’s appointment was revealed through a social media post by Trump, highlighting Pulte’s experience in managing substantial financial matters. According to Trump, Pulte is someone with “deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago.”

The position of director of national intelligence was established post-9/11 to enhance coordination among U.S. intelligence agencies. However, Pulte’s selection has stirred controversy due to his lack of experience in national security.

Bill Pulte, known for his loyalty to the Trump administration, is not new to controversy. Last year, he accused Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve Board of Governors member, of mortgage fraud. Cook, the first Black woman on the board, denied the allegations. The case was heard by the Supreme Court in January, with a ruling still pending.

Democratic leaders swiftly criticized the appointment. Senator Mark Warner, the leading Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed concerns about Pulte’s potential influence. Warner stated, “Rather than selecting a respected national security professional capable of delivering independent judgments, the president has chosen an official who has demonstrated not just willingness but eagerness to use the authorities of government to pursue political retribution.”

Warner further expressed his apprehension that Pulte might “shape intelligence around the president’s wishes, regardless of the cost to the American people.”

Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation effective June 30, citing personal reasons related to her husband’s health. Pulte is not the only administration official juggling multiple roles; Secretary of State Marco Rubio also serves as acting national security adviser, having recently stepped down as the acting archivist of the United States.
