Progressive Victory in Minnesota: Peggy Flanagan Secures Democratic Senate Nomination
In a significant shift within the Democratic Party, Minnesota’s Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan emerged victorious over her centrist rival, securing the party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate. The Associated Press confirmed Flanagan’s triumph, marking a notable win for progressive Democrats as they gear up for the midterm elections.
The race saw Flanagan, a progressive candidate, engage in a heated campaign against Rep. Angie Craig. Throughout the contest, Flanagan received backing from influential figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. Her win follows another progressive victory in Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed clinched the Senate nomination.

Flanagan’s campaign highlighted her personal journey from a childhood reliant on government assistance to a middle-class life, emphasizing her commitment to defending social support programs. Her platform promises “radical change,” advocating for the dismantling of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the expansion of Medicare to include everyone.
Despite facing a well-funded opponent, Flanagan’s message resonated with voters. Rep. Angie Craig, who had the financial upper hand and endorsements from figures like former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., could not overcome the progressive wave.
Craig’s campaign had targeted Flanagan’s connection to state government, particularly concerning alleged fraud in state programs. Conversely, Flanagan criticized Craig’s past support for the Laken Riley Act amid heightened federal immigration enforcement.
Meanwhile, the Republican primary saw former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya secure her party’s nomination, setting the stage for a competitive general election.
