Sununu Campaign Finances: Payments to Family Members Scrutinized

In a recent development in New Hampshire politics, John Sununu’s U.S. Senate campaign has come under spotlight after campaign finance reports revealed payments to his sister, Catherine Sununu, totaling over $36,000. Additionally, Sununu compensated himself more than $15,000.

The disbursements, recorded from March to June of this year, were categorized differently: Catherine’s payments were noted as “Fundraising Consulting,” while Sununu’s own payments were described as “Reimbursement-See Memo,” despite the absence of an actual memo.

The Sununu family is deeply entrenched in the political landscape of New Hampshire. John H. Sununu, the father, served as governor from 1983 to 1989 and was later the White House chief of staff under President George H.W. Bush. John’s brother, Chris Sununu, held the governor’s office from 2017 until last year. John Sununu himself was a U.S. Senator from 2003 to 2009.

Aside from political influence, the Sununu family is also known for its wealth. Another brother, Michael Sununu, established Sununu Holdings LLC, an investment firm where John Sununu is a shareholder. In 2024, John H. Sununu transferred 900,000 shares of mining stock to the company’s assets. John Sununu’s net worth is estimated at up to $36.3 million, whereas Chris Sununu is valued at $7.4 million. This financial standing prompts questions about the necessity of Sununu and his sister being on the campaign payroll.

Catherine Sununu’s association with her family’s political activities has previously attracted attention. Her interior design firm received $50,188 for “supplies and decor” during Chris Sununu’s 2017 inauguration, an event she was involved with as a committee member. The Union Leader noted that her company lacked both a website and a functional phone number. Catherine explained that her company was paid because she “did everything” for the inauguration planning.

Sununu’s endeavor to return to the Senate is anticipated to be a competitive race. He is set to compete against former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown in the primary on September 8. The primary victor is expected to challenge Democratic Representative Chris Pappas in the general election.
