KYIV, Ukraine — On Sunday, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Ukraine’s capital, marking their initial official visit amidst the ongoing conflict. Their arrival signifies a fresh attempt to revive peace talks, following their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow just a day prior.
The dialogue with Putin did not yield immediate breakthroughs, yet it was characterized as “constructive, frank, and useful” by Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy advisor. Ushakov noted that the discussions were not solely about the war; economic collaborations were also on the table.
Ukraine’s Readiness for Dialogue
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed Kyiv’s readiness for discussions with the U.S., emphasizing the need for peace and security guarantees. “We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer,” Zelenskyy stated on Telegram, highlighting Ukraine’s prepared proposals for a sustainable postwar peace.
Ongoing Conflict Despite Talks
The air war between Russia and Ukraine has reached new heights, with both sides intensifying their aerial assaults. Despite a temporary pause in attacks on each other’s capitals agreed upon by Putin and Zelenskyy, hostilities resumed overnight into Sunday.
Russian strikes led to casualties in Ukraine, including a fatality and multiple injuries in the Zaporizhzhia and Khmelnytskyi regions. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 82 drones out of 108 launched by Russia overnight.
Casualties on Both Sides
In Russia, a drone attack by Ukraine resulted in one death and one serious injury in the Belgorod border region. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses downed 258 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.
Mixed Reactions to Peace Efforts
In Kyiv, a moment of silence honored Ukraine’s fallen soldiers, reflecting a somber yet hopeful sentiment among many citizens. Nataliia Lipei, who lost her son in 2022, voiced optimism for the talks, hoping for an end to the bloodshed.
However, skepticism remains. Oleksandr Pastukhov, attending the commemoration, doubted the impact of the envoys’ visit, citing past experiences with failed ceasefires and peace initiatives. “We’ve seen this so-called ceasefire for three days, which ended after just a couple of hours,” he remarked to The Associated Press.
