Jo Strogatz Wins 2024 NPR College Podcast Challenge with “Just Friends”

A New Perspective on Relationships: Jo Strogatz’s Winning Story

Jo Strogatz, a young podcaster, shares insights into relationships that resonate with many in her generation. Her reflections earned her the grand prize in the NPR College Podcast Challenge with her piece, Just Friends.

Strogatz’s journey began with personal questions about romantic relationships. “In college, I spent a long time trying to date people, convincing myself that I was happy doing it and not finding people that were actually a match for me,” she recalled.

After completing her studies in psychology and music at Tufts University, Strogatz continued her education at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine. It was there that she found inspiration for her podcast, exploring the idea of fulfillment through friendships rather than traditional romantic paths.

Her quest led her to Steve Small, a 60-something family friend known for his conversational skills and excellent banana bread. Through conversations with Small, who has been single his entire adult life, Strogatz explored different perspectives on love and companionship.

Redefining the Importance of Friendships

Small’s story, featured in Just Friends, offers a poignant look at how he’s found happiness outside of romantic relationships. “I only know my life the way that it has been,” he says. “My friendships are a hundred times more important to me. My friendships are the closest thing I have to a marriage.”

His experiences during the 1980s AIDS epidemic in New York City and his reflections on relationships around him have shaped his understanding of love and self-fulfillment. He shared in the podcast, “And I thought I can either be single and happy or together and stuck.”

Musical Storytelling

Strogatz, also a musician, used her talents to enhance her storytelling. “The way that he told his story felt like music to me,” she said. The original score she composed for Just Friends became integral to the narrative, guiding listeners through Small’s life experiences.

Ailsa Chang, a judge for the NPR challenge, praised Strogatz’s work, noting, “Jo’s story, music and voice held my interest from the very beginning.”

Embracing Individuality

Strogatz’s conversations with Small have influenced her own outlook on relationships. While she still hopes to marry and have a family someday, she’s relieved herself of the pressure to find a partner immediately. “When I find somebody they will be a better match, because I’ll know who I am,” she shared with Small.

Small’s response to Strogatz’s admiration was simple, “You’ll get there.”
