Deaf single mom delivers inspiring commencement speech in Colorado

An Inspiring Journey: Deaf Single Mom Triumphs at Graduation

A remarkable story unfolded in Colorado as a single mother, who is deaf, defied numerous obstacles to deliver the commencement address at her college graduation. Her journey to the podium was one marked by resilience and determination.

In a report by Colorado Public Radio’s Jenny Brundin, the newly graduated Kaitlyn McCormick shared her experience with her fellow graduates: “I stand before you today not just as a graduate.”

With her hands slightly trembling in her black graduation robes, McCormick addressed an audience of a thousand classmates. “Honestly, there were days I was barely hanging on,” she admitted, recounting her experience of balancing full-time work, single parenthood, and navigating a world often inaccessible to the deaf community.

McCormick, born with a genetic disorder causing deafness, relies on cochlear implants and sometimes a sign language interpreter. Her educational journey was not straightforward; she made multiple attempts at college but faced financial and support system challenges.

While working at a call center, McCormick discovered a programming language. A serendipitous visit to a thrift store led her to a used programming book, which she bought hoping for career advancement. “I didn’t know it then, but that spark would light the fire that brought me here,” she reflected.

After becoming a single mother, McCormick learned about data engineering at a new job, prompting her return to education. She enrolled at Colorado State University Global, an entirely online institution, while managing her responsibilities as a full-time working mom.

Feeling overwhelmed, McCormick reached out to her best friend Kailyn for support. Kailyn, who also has a hearing impairment and other disabilities, encouraged her with the words, “Don’t give up the rest of your life. My time is limited here. But you have the gift to not give up.” This message became a source of inspiration for McCormick.

Her perseverance paid off, and she eventually stood proudly at the podium, declaring, “Congratulations, class of 2025. We did it,” to the cheers of her audience. McCormick graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems and business analytics, marking a significant achievement in her life.

As McCormick described the moment, “It’s a sense of fulfillment. It’s a sense of achievement,” her story stands as a testament to the power of resilience and determination.
