Manhunt in Montana: Suspect Sought After Shooting at Anaconda Bar

Search Intensifies for Montana Shooting Suspect

A quiet Montana town is on high alert after a tragic shooting incident at a local bar. Authorities are on the hunt for a military veteran, Michael Paul Brown, who is suspected of opening fire at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

The incident unfolded in the small town of Anaconda, located approximately 25 miles northwest of Butte, Montana. Michael Paul Brown, aged 45, reportedly fled the scene in a white pickup truck, which was later abandoned. Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, has urged residents to remain indoors and vigilant.

In an effort to locate Brown, authorities released an image showing him barefoot and shirtless, dressed in black shorts, departing from the bar following the shooting. “While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals, he is believed to be armed, and he is extremely dangerous,” Johnson stated.

Details regarding the identity of the victims are being withheld until family notifications are completed. Johnson emphasized the impact on the local community, saying, “This is a small tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual who does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for.”

Michael Paul Brown, who lived next to The Owl Bar, was described by bar owner David Gwerder as familiar with the victims, which included the bartender and three patrons. “He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,” Gwerder remarked. “He didn’t have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.”

Brown’s military background includes service in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2005, with a deployment to Iraq, and later involvement in the Montana National Guard until 2009. His niece, Clare Boyle, revealed that he has long struggled with mental health issues, describing him as a “sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either.”

Authorities have concentrated their search around the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda, utilizing both ground and aerial resources. Randy Clark, a retired police officer, observed a helicopter conducting surveillance as officers maneuvered through the wooded area.

Local businesses have taken precautionary measures in response to the unfolding events. Barbie Nelson, owner of the Firefly Café, recounted locking her doors and staying inside with customers. “We are Montana, so guns are not new to us,” she said. “For our town to be locked down, everybody’s pretty rattled.”
