Remembering Mark Knoller: Iconic White House Reporter Passes at 73

The White House Press Corps Mourns a Legend

This weekend marked the loss of a pivotal figure in the White House press corps, as the community bid farewell to Mark Knoller, a seasoned CBS News reporter and a familiar face in the briefing room.

Mark Knoller’s career spanned several decades, during which he diligently covered presidents from George H.W. Bush through Donald Trump. Known for his distinctive reporting style, Knoller was recognized by colleagues for his booming voice that often echoed through press filing centers worldwide as he recorded his radio segments.

Steven Portnoy, currently with ABC News and a former colleague at CBS, noted Knoller’s unique ability to extract behind-the-scenes details from White House officials. This dedication to thorough reporting was evident in Knoller’s probing questions, often touching on activities not publicly disclosed. “Aside from rallies and fundraising, what other kinds of campaign activities is the president engaging in that we don’t know about because they’re not done in public?” Knoller once queried.

Knoller’s meticulous nature extended to his record-keeping, tracking presidential activities such as golf outings, state visits, and even the language used by presidents. The comprehensive digital files he maintained served as a valuable resource for his reporting and benefited the entire press corps.

Whenever uncertainties arose regarding White House practices, reporters frequently turned to Knoller for clarity. As Portnoy explained, “If there was ever a question among reporters about how things were being done at the White House, people would turn to Mark Knoller and ask, hey, Mark, is this normal?” Knoller’s belief in a president’s right to define their office was matched by his conviction in the press’s duty to document those evolutions for historical reference.

Mark Knoller was 73 years old when he passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to White House reporting and documentation.
