Education Department Teams Up with Conservative Groups for Civics Initiative
The U.S. Department of Education has announced a significant collaboration with over 40 conservative entities to develop civics programming in anticipation of the United States’ 250th anniversary. This initiative aims to provide young Americans with a deeper understanding of the nation’s founding principles.
U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated in a press release that the coalition “will take bold steps to educate, inspire, and mobilize youth toward active and informed citizenship.” The initiative, named the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, will be managed by the Education Department and spearheaded by the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), a conservative nonprofit organization.
Participating groups include Turning Point USA, the Heritage Foundation, Hillsdale College, among other national and state conservative organizations. The Education Department’s statement emphasized that the coalition is dedicated to “renewing patriotism, strengthening civic knowledge, and advancing a shared understanding of America’s founding principles in schools across the nation.”
While specific educational materials and programs have yet to be detailed, the coalition held its inaugural meeting recently and plans to introduce a comprehensive programming agenda over the next year. This agenda includes a nationwide speaking tour on college campuses and a series of lectures on fundamental liberties.
Erika Donalds, co-chair of the coalition and chair of education opportunity at AFPI, highlighted the coalition’s goal: “Through this coalition, we are uniting to bring these lessons back to classrooms and communities and prepare future generations to safeguard our republic.”
In tandem with this announcement, the Trump administration is actively working to dismantle the Education Department to “return education to the states.” It’s important to note that federal law prohibits the federal government from exerting control over school curriculums.
Efforts to reach Education Department officials for comments were unsuccessful. However, the department did announce a forthcoming grant program dedicated to promoting civic education covering American history, values, and geography from an unbiased perspective.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by President Trump to instill patriotism in education. Previously, Trump established the “1776 Commission” during his first term to guide the teaching of America’s founding principles. Additionally, in a recent executive action aimed at “ending racial indoctrination” in schools, he revived it.
