Stars rally for free speech after Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension by ABC

A-List Celebrities Rally Behind Jimmy Kimmel Amidst Free Speech Controversy

In an unprecedented show of unity, over 400 artists and entertainers have joined forces to defend free speech following the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show by ABC. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) orchestrated an open letter in response to what they call “a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation.”

The letter, signed by prominent figures including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Pedro Pascal, Selena Gomez, and Olivia Rodrigo, challenges the government’s alleged interference in media affairs. It states, “Last week, Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air after the government threatened a private company with retaliation, marking a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation.”

ABC’s decision to suspend Kimmel’s show came after his monologue criticizing the conservative reaction to the death of activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel’s remarks about the “MAGA gang” were met with backlash, prompting the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Brendan Carr to pressure ABC into action.

Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the ACLU, likened the situation to a modern McCarthy era, emphasizing the constitutional right to free speech. Romero stated, “We now find ourselves in a modern McCarthy era, facing exactly the type of heavy-handed government censorship our Constitution rightfully forbids.”

In solidarity, other entertainers have expressed their discontent through various forms of protest. Notably, Sarah McLaughlin and Jewel canceled their performances at the Hulu documentary premiere Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery. McLaughlin expressed concerns about the “insidious erosion of women’s rights, of trans and queer rights, the muzzling of free speech.”

Meanwhile, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz have also voiced their concerns. Carlson warned against the implications of restricting free speech, while Cruz criticized the FCC’s actions, comparing them to tactics used by mobsters.

As the situation unfolds, the entertainment industry and political commentators continue to engage in a heated debate over the boundaries of free speech and government influence.
