Liberals, Minorities Join Gun Ownership Surge Amid Safety Concerns

The Rise of Liberal Gun Ownership in the Trump Era

In recent years, the landscape of gun ownership in America has shifted, with an increasing number of liberals, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals purchasing firearms. This trend has been particularly noticeable since the re-election of President Trump in 2024, driven by concerns over civil unrest and safety.

One such individual is Charles, a doctor from Maryland. Raised in a strict household in Brooklyn, New York, where even toy guns were forbidden, Charles now finds himself visiting a shooting range weekly, practicing with his Smith & Wesson .380. He cites actions by the Trump administration, such as the arrest of a foreign student and the handcuffing of a U.S. senator, as motivations for his decision to purchase a firearm.

“What I’m talking about is protecting myself from a situation where there may be some kind of civil unrest,” Charles explains, expressing his fears that some Trump supporters might target minorities like his family.

Changing Dynamics in Gun Ownership

The image of the typical American gun owner is evolving. Traditionally seen as white, rural, and Republican, gun ownership now includes a more diverse demographic. According to David Phillips from the Liberal Gun Club, membership in the club has surged from 2,700 to 4,500 since November, with training requests increasing fivefold.

“The concern is about the supporters of the right-wing who feel that they have been given permission to run roughshod at least, if not commit outright violence against people they don’t like,” Phillips states.

This shift in gun ownership has not gone unnoticed by the White House, which dismissed NPR’s report on the trend. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson criticized NPR for allegedly trying to blame President Trump and highlighted the lack of federal funding for NPR as a positive outcome.

A Surge in Gun Purchases

From gun clubs to academic researchers, many have noted a surge in gun purchases among liberals. Tom Nguyen from the LA Progressive Shooters and Thomas Boyer from the San Francisco Chapter of the Pink Pistols both reported unprecedented demand for gun training and membership.

Even traditional Second Amendment groups acknowledge this trend. Taylor Rhodes from the National Association for Gun Rights confirmed, “It’s definitely common knowledge at this point.”

Google Trends data also supports this observation, with spikes in searches for “How do I buy a gun?” coinciding with key political events such as Trump’s re-election and inauguration.

Self-Protection as the Primary Motivation

For most new gun owners, self-protection is the primary reason for purchasing a firearm. MJ, a member of a liberal self-defense group, emphasizes that their focus is strictly on self-defense, not aggression. “If anyone even talks like that, I or someone else would probably boot them out of the group,” MJ asserts.

Bill Sack from the Second Amendment Foundation recognizes the right of liberals to self-defense but laments the fear driving these purchases. “Is it a good thing that people are scared? No, of course not,” he says.

Despite the unlikely scenario of needing a firearm for protection, new gun owners like Charles feel the responsibility to be prepared. “As a man, as a father, as a husband, how remiss and derelict would it be for me to not be prepared?” Charles reflects.
