Bigfoot Story by Sixth Grader Shines in NPR Podcast Challenge

An Enthralling Student Podcast Explores the Mysteries of Bigfoot

Each year, NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge invites young voices to share their unique stories. The competition sees a variety of entries, from investigative journalism to intimate family interviews. Among these submissions, some stand out for their creativity and storytelling.

This year, one such gem is “Monster Madness,” a podcast created by 11-year-old Ryan Betts-Ng. Enthusiastically described by Ryan, “Monster Madness, it’s the podcast that we need,” the podcast explores the lore of legendary creatures, with a special focus on Bigfoot. Ryan, a sixth grader from Redwood Day School in Oakland, California, crafted this piece with the assistance of his younger brother, Marshall.

The Betts-Ng brothers’ entry captivated the judges with its blend of thorough research, creative storytelling, and original sound effects. Their infectious enthusiasm and humor added a delightful element to their narrative.

Listeners can dive into Ryan and Marshall’s work by tuning into Monster Madness, which earned them a spot as middle school finalists in the 2025 NPR Student Podcast Challenge.
