An Intimate Family Journey: A Podcast That Sparks Difficult Conversations
In a heartwarming yet challenging narrative, Colby McCaskill, a senior at Fordham University, captures the evolving dynamics of his family through a poignant podcast. The podcast, which won the grand prize at NPR’s College Podcast Challenge, serves as both a personal reflection and a conversation starter regarding the impact of dementia on his grandmother, Kathy McCaskill.
PENSACOLA, Fla. — In the comfort of their rental condo, Colby McCaskill joined his grandparents, Kathy and Dick McCaskill, in coloring an intricate star from an adult coloring book. A therapeutic activity, coloring helps Kathy manage her anxiety and cognitive challenges associated with dementia. “We love to do this,” Kathy, 77, shared with a laugh, while her husband, Dick, 76, affectionately noted, “I married a blue girl.” Coloring aids Kathy in coping with her dementia.
Colby, visiting from New York, where he is about to graduate, has witnessed a shift in his grandparents’ roles. The adventurous stories of long bike rides and skiing now give way to living in the present, as they navigate health challenges. This transition inspired him to create an audio letter titled Dear Papa, expressing his struggle with their aging process. “It’s hard to admit because it feels like there’s no solution, but I really wish you and Grammy weren’t growing so old,” he conveys in the podcast.
Exploring Dementia Through a Personal Lens
The podcast interlaces past visits with interviews and introspection, capturing Kathy’s cognitive decline. In a candid moment, Kathy humorously misremembers her age as 47, illustrating the gradual memory loss she faces. “I’m sure you know out of everyone how her dementia has been progressing,” Colby narrates, highlighting the emotional weight of her condition.
For Dick, who has been by Kathy’s side throughout her journey with dementia, listening to the podcast evokes tears and emotions. “I’ve listened to [the podcast] four or five times, and it brings tears every time I hear it,” he admits, reflecting on the impact of Colby’s words.
An Unwavering Bond in the Face of Change
Despite the challenges, Kathy and Dick’s love story endures. Dick shares his prayer for patience as he helps Kathy through daily tasks, such as managing an electric toothbrush. Their relationship, rooted in faith and understanding, remains a source of strength. “The Lord knows it all,” Kathy often says, finding peace in the phrase.
Colby’s podcast captures this enduring love, as Dick reassures him, “It’s getting, on many levels, better and sweeter.” Kathy appreciates Dick’s patience, saying, “My precious husband will stop and wait and help me bring it back to me.”
Creating a Dialogue Around Aging
Colby’s podcast not only serves as an emotional outlet but also as a catalyst for conversations about difficult topics like aging and mortality. Prior to the recording, such discussions were avoided, partly due to Colby’s fear of making the situation more distressing. “I was a little scared to talk about it,” he confesses, contemplating the absence of a medical solution.
The podcast allowed the family to confront these realities, fostering open communication about their future and strengthening their connection. “The ideal outcome was that I get to tell my grandparents how I feel,” Colby says, grateful for the opportunity to share emotions and listen to their perspectives.
