Senior Voices to Shine in NPR’s New Podcast Challenge
As America’s senior population continues to rise, NPR is launching an initiative to capture the stories of those aged 65 and older. With approximately 60 million seniors making up the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S., this project aims to document their wisdom and life experiences through audio storytelling.
NPR is inviting seniors to participate in the Senior Podcast Challenge by recording and submitting their personal narratives. The focus is on stories encompassing love, family, finance, health, and even dreams and fears for the future. Selected entries will be featured on NPR shows, with one grand-prize winner earning a trip to NPR’s Washington headquarters to see their story broadcast live on Weekend Edition Sunday.
Exploring Diverse Narratives
This competition echoes the success of previous NPR initiatives, such as the NPR Student Podcast Challenge and the College Podcast Challenge. Participants are encouraged to cover a wide range of topics, showcasing their enthusiasm and unique perspectives. Potential themes for senior podcasts include:
- Adapting to retirement or managing life on a fixed income.
- Healthcare challenges and costs.
- Experiencing isolation after a divorce or the loss of a partner.
- Interviews with friends or family members.
- Reflections on family history, careers, and historical events.
- Romantic endeavors, travel, and new career pursuits.
- Grandchildren, lifelong learning, and starting anew.
Previous entries from students have highlighted the stories of seniors, such as interviews with grandparents, family immigration tales, and community stories. A standout entry featured a non-traditional student who pursued college in her 60s (read more here).
Submission Guidelines and Important Dates
The competition runs from August 16 to November 30. Participants can submit their entries here. Podcasts should be original and no longer than eight minutes. While creativity in storytelling is encouraged, submissions must avoid copyrighted music and AI-generated content. For more details, refer to the official rules page.
The finalists and the grand-prize winner will be announced early next year, with the winning podcast airing on Weekend Edition Sunday in January or February.
