Can a podcast serve as a transformative force in one’s life? This is a reality for Anya Steinberg, the inaugural winner of the NPR College Podcast Challenge held five years ago. As the latest edition of the challenge kicks off, Steinberg reconnects with fellow participants to explore how their stories have shaped their journeys.
Revisiting the Past: The NPR College Podcast Challenge
Five years ago, Miriam Colvin, then a freshman at Penn State University, stood out in NPR’s first-ever podcast contest. Her podcast delved into a captivating family tale involving a boxing match between her grandfather’s friend and a young Muhammad Ali, known then as Cassius Clay.
MIRIAM COLVIN: “The underdog story is one that we’re all very familiar with.”
Today, Colvin cherishes her grandfather’s stories—from childhood adventures to romantic encounters. These narratives have inspired her to pursue stand-up comedy and playwriting.
Family Ties and Language Barriers
Similar to Colvin, Bunmi Omisore crafted a podcast centered on her family. Her challenge was the inability to communicate in Yoruba, her family’s native tongue. As a senior at Duke University, Omisore realized her fear of making mistakes was holding her back from embracing her heritage.
BUNMI OMISORE: “That slight discomfort that had stopped me for so long, it kind of makes you wonder, OK, how many other things are we missing out on because we’re not willing to be in that position as a learner?”
Encouraged by her experience, Omisore committed to learning Yoruba, with her father supporting her by only speaking to her in their native language.
Friendship and Romance: A New Perspective
Jo Strogatz, another participant, found her path to Radiolab through the College Podcast Challenge. Her entry, featuring a friend who had never experienced romantic love, offered a profound insight into the value of friendships.
JO STROGATZ: “There’s so much about friendships that can be romantic.”
Strogatz’s podcast journey altered her perception of relationships, emphasizing the significance of platonic bonds. Her story culminates with a trip to Paris, not with her boyfriend, but with one of her closest friends.
The Challenge Continues
As these stories inspire aspiring podcasters, NPR invites college students to participate in the current College Podcast Challenge, with a chance to win $5,000 and have their stories featured on NPR. Submissions are open until January 2027. Visit npr.org/studentpodcastchallenge to learn more.
