COLUMBIA, S.C. — Darline Graham, a political newcomer, has secured the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina, following a significant endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Her victory was declared by the Associated Press after she prevailed over Rep. Ralph Norman in a special election primary runoff.
Graham, who aims to succeed her late brother, Lindsey Graham, will now face Democratic contender Annie Andrews in the upcoming November election in this predominantly Republican state. Her brother’s Senate seat became vacant following his passing due to a heart condition on July 11, leading to her interim appointment by Governor Henry McMaster.
Trump’s Unyielding Influence in GOP Primaries
This election was one of Trump’s key moves in the midterm primary cycle, as he placed his support behind Graham against more experienced party members. “I’m doing this to honor Lindsey. That’s why I’m here,” Trump stated at a rally, emphasizing his commitment to Graham’s campaign. Graham, meanwhile, openly acknowledged her lack of political experience, stating, “The critics say I shouldn’t run for the Senate. They say I’m not a politician. You know what I say? Guilty as charged.”
Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., invested over $827,000 in Graham’s campaign, highlighting the former president’s strategic involvement in Republican primaries. While Trump’s endorsements have seen mixed results this year, his backing remains influential within the party base.
Ray Saldi, a voter in South Carolina, expressed confidence in Graham, citing her family name and fresh political approach as compelling factors. “I really liked her brother, Lindsey Graham. I just wanted to make sure that she’s truly genuine to the people of South Carolina,” Saldi commented.
An Experienced Political Foe
Despite Graham’s inexperience, she entered the race with a robust campaign infrastructure, owing much to her brother’s longstanding political career. During the only debate leading up to the runoff, Graham faced criticism over her knowledge of national security issues, an area her brother was notably strong in.
Rep. Ralph Norman, Graham’s opponent, leveraged his political experience, having served multiple terms in Congress. Despite this, Norman positioned himself as the underdog in the race, emphasizing his grassroots support and aligning with former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who endorsed him through substantial PAC funding.
This election cycle has seen a trend of voters favoring anti-establishment candidates, with Graham’s outsider status serving as a pivotal part of her campaign narrative.
