During an emotional memorial service, Erika Kirk, widow of the well-known conservative figure Charlie Kirk, expressed forgiveness towards her husband’s alleged killer. Her profound words resonated with many attendees at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Despite the tragedy, Erika Kirk stated, “That man, that young man … I forgive him.” Her remarks were met with applause from the audience gathered to honor Charlie Kirk’s memory. She explained her motivation, saying, “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and is what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the gospel is love and always love. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.”
The recent filing of murder charges against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson added weight to her words. Robinson had reportedly confessed to the shooting, claiming he was provoked by Kirk’s rhetoric.
Erika Kirk, who has two young children, recounted the heart-wrenching moment she saw her husband at the hospital following the shooting at Utah Valley University. “I saw the wound that ended his life … I felt shock, I felt horror and a level of heartache that I didn’t even know existed,” she shared. However, she found solace in noticing “a great mercy from God in this tragedy,” believing her husband did not suffer.
The memorial service, attended by tens of thousands, was marked by a call for prayer and unity. Erika Kirk emphasized, “We didn’t see violence, we didn’t see riots. We didn’t see revolution. Instead, we saw what my husband always prayed he would see in this country: We saw revival. We saw people open a Bible for the first time in a decade.”
In a powerful message to the audience, she encouraged them to “Pray again, read the Bible again, go to church next Sunday, and the Sunday after that and break free from the temptations and shackles of this world.”
Her sentiments sharply contrasted with remarks from political leaders like Vice President Vance and President Trump, who delivered speeches before and after her. While Vance spoke of the persistence of evil, Trump candidly expressed his animosity towards his opponents.
Emphasis on the Family
A pivotal theme of the memorial was the importance of family, a cause close to Charlie Kirk’s heart. Erika Kirk reminded those present of her husband’s mission to “revive the American family.” She encouraged men to follow Charlie’s example in Christian marriage, emphasizing mutual respect and partnership.
“Please be a leader worth following,” she urged. “Your wife is not your servant. Your wife is not your employee. Your wife is not your slave. She is your helper. You are not rivals. You are one flesh, working together for the glory of God.”
In her closing remarks, Erika Kirk likened her husband to a martyr who fulfilled his purpose. Although his life was cut short, she believed he had no regrets, stating, “He died with incomplete work but not with unfinished business.”
Following her husband’s passing, Erika Kirk was appointed as the new CEO of Turning Point USA, the organization Charlie Kirk founded to engage conservative youth.
