Close Races in Los Angeles as Election Results Continue to Roll In
As the dust settles after the elections, two pivotal primary races in Los Angeles remain undecided. The outcomes will shape the political landscape for the gubernatorial and mayoral contests in the upcoming November elections.
In the race for California governor, Democrat Xavier Becerra, the former health secretary under President Biden, has secured a position in the November election. The competition for the second spot is intense, with former Fox News host, a Republican, vying against a Democrat climate activist and billionaire for the coveted position.
Concurrently, the battle for the mayoral seat of Los Angeles sees incumbent Democrat Karen Bass advancing to the next round. However, her opponent remains undetermined. NPR affiliate LAist reporter Frank Stoltze provides insight into these developments.
Gubernatorial Race: A Tight Contest
Xavier Becerra’s advancement in the gubernatorial race places him in a strong position to potentially become the first Latino governor of California, should he face off against the Republican candidate. Currently, Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, holds the second position, followed closely by Tom Steyer, a billionaire and progressive Democrat. As Frank Stoltze notes, “The progressive vote is coming in later in California,” suggesting Steyer still has a chance to overtake Hilton.
Regardless of the final outcome for the second spot, the scenario remains favorable for Democrats in a state with a strong Democratic leaning, potentially leading to a Democrat versus Democrat showdown in November.
Mayoral Race: Bass Faces Challenges
Mayor Karen Bass, while leading the primary, only claimed about a third of the votes. Voter dissatisfaction stems from a variety of issues, including homelessness, high housing costs, and infrastructure problems. Despite a reported 18% decrease in homelessness under her leadership, Los Angeles still grapples with over 40,000 unhoused residents, the highest in the nation.
Bass also faced criticism for her handling of the Palisades Fire, being absent on a diplomatic trip during the crisis. This, coupled with general discontent with longstanding Democratic governance in major cities, has left her vulnerable.
The Role of Republican Challenger Spencer Pratt
Spencer Pratt, a Republican and reality TV star, is capitalizing on voter frustration, especially concerning the city’s fire preparedness. His personal loss in the Palisades Fire has added weight to his critiques. However, his campaign has also been marked by controversial statements, such as categorizing all homeless individuals as drug addicts, which experts argue oversimplifies the issue by ignoring underlying factors like affordable housing.
Pratt’s significant social media presence has further fueled the debate. One viral AI-generated video depicted Pratt as Batman and Bass as The Joker in a dystopian Los Angeles, critiquing not only Bass but also the broader Democratic establishment.
The Path Forward
The mayoral race now hinges on whether Spencer Pratt or Democratic socialist Nithya Raman, a councilwoman, will secure the second spot to challenge Bass in November. The unfolding political drama continues to captivate Los Angeles residents as they await final results.
