Senator Murkowski’s Opposition Tightens Path to AG Confirmation for Trump’s Nominee
In a notable development, Sen. Lisa Murkowski from Alaska has stated her intention to oppose President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche, complicating the nominee’s path to Senate confirmation.
“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski expressed on X, casting doubt on Blanche’s ability to fulfill this role if confirmed.
Her stance stems from concerns over the “sweeping immunity protections granted to the president” and the perceived “politicization—even weaponization” of the Department of Justice.
A key element influencing Murkowski’s position was the controversial anti-weaponization fund, initially proposed to support those claiming government overreach. Blanche recently confirmed the fund’s rescindment, a move following pressure from GOP senators like John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who demanded clarity before proceeding with the nomination vote.
Her decision aligns her with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, another Republican voicing opposition to Blanche. Blanche, acting as attorney general, has been actively engaging with GOP members to address concerns, including a visit to Murkowski’s state to meet with leaders.
All Democrats are expected to oppose the nomination. Without the support of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and with Murkowski’s opposition, Blanche is unable to afford losing any additional Republican votes.
Attention now turns to Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who has been critical of the administration following his primary loss to a Trump-backed candidate, as his vote could be pivotal.
