During a significant meeting at Chequers in Aylesbury, the political arena was abuzz as President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a joint press conference on September 18. President Trump expressed disapproval of Starmer’s plans to recognize the Palestinian state, contingent upon Israel’s commitment to peace in Gaza. This marks a rare point of contention between the two leaders, with Trump emphasizing the immediate need for the release of hostages as a priority.

The leaders also discussed Russia’s war on Ukraine

Prime Minister Starmer, advocating for stronger European support for Ukraine, stressed the importance of pressuring Russia to cease its aggressive actions. “In recent days, Putin has shown his true face mounting the biggest attack since the invasion began, with yet more bloodshed, yet more innocents killed, and unprecedented violations of NATO airspace,” Starmer stated.

The leaders’ dialogue on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict also highlighted Trump’s previous meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although Trump anticipated facilitating discussions between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy, an escalation in Russian offensive activities has thwarted those efforts.

Trump’s stance included conditioning new sanctions on Russia, calling for NATO allies to halt energy purchases from Russia and impose tariffs on Chinese imports. Expressing disappointment in Putin, Trump remarked, “He’s let me down. He’s really let me down,” conveying his frustration over the lack of progress in resolving the conflict.

Starmer emphasized the necessity for increased pressure on Putin, noting the impact of recent Russian strikes and drone incidents. “It’s only when the president [Trump] has put pressure on Putin that he’s actually shown any inclination to move. So we have to ramp that pressure up,” Starmer said. He further suggested that an “American guarantee” could bolster European efforts.

In addition to the geopolitical discussions, Trump mentioned the United States’ interest in regaining control of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The press conference also marked the conclusion of Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom, where the British government aimed to strengthen ties with the U.S. in trade and national security.

During their meeting at Chequers, Trump and Starmer signed an agreement to enhance collaboration in technology and nuclear energy. Trump noted that expanding nuclear energy would support AI development due to its energy demands.
