Investigation Underway After Fatal Cargo Plane Crash at Miami Airport
A tragic incident unfolded at Miami International Airport on Sunday when an Amazon cargo plane crash resulted in the death of five individuals and injuries to at least five others. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is working diligently to uncover the cause of this unfortunate event.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy explained that the plane overshot the runway during landing, leading to a collision with several vehicles outside the airport. Among the impacted vehicles was a van from a cleaning company servicing the airport, housing seven occupants at the time. The plane also struck an SUV, leaving it severely damaged.
Homendy stated, “There’s fuel everywhere. That will have to be remediated. But then they are also removing fuel from the aircraft. So we have to allow that to occur. And as we speak, recovery operations continue.”
The investigation is ongoing, and interviews with the pilot and copilot are expected to be scheduled soon. Attention has been drawn to the absence of an emergency stopping system, known as EMAS, at Miami International Airport. This system is designed to decelerate planes before they exit the runway. Former NTSB senior air safety investigator Gregory Feith noted that an EMAS system might have prevented the tragedy, commenting, “EMAS systems are expensive, but not so expensive that an airport can’t afford it.”
The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the lack of EMAS systems at the airport.
The crash has significantly disrupted operations at Miami International Airport, coinciding with a busy holiday travel period. Two of the airport’s four runways remain closed, leading to flight cancellations, delays, and long lines. As travelers rush to return home after the holiday weekend, hundreds of flights have been affected.
