Leroy Bishop, a car enthusiast filling up at Buc-ee’s, explains, “For the pulling power, so I can pull my cars.” Bishop uses his diesel GMC truck to transport vehicles to car shows, highlighting its superior performance on highways.

Since the onset of the conflict with Iran, which reduced a portion of the global oil supply, diesel prices have surged by more than $2 a gallon. Although Bishop is driving his truck less frequently, he notes, “No. It ain’t killing me, but it ain’t fun.”

For others, diesel is essential for business operations. Chef Joe Sciarrotta, who owns the Hey Bebe food truck, relies on diesel to haul his 26-foot, heavily-loaded food trailer. “Diesel gives me the power to pull that 26-foot food truck. It’s heavy. It’s a heavy trailer,” says Sciarrotta.
With annual diesel and gas expenses previously totaling $32,000, Sciarrotta expects this year’s costs to rise to nearly $44,000. While many are increasing prices to cover these expenses, Sciarrotta is hesitant, stating, “A lot of people are raising prices. You can only get so much for jambalaya.”
Price Increases Across Industries
Not everyone can avoid raising prices. Michelle Corter, driving a Ford 450 that hauls shutters for her company, confirms, “We literally, in a few weeks, are having a price increase going into effect because of the price of diesel affecting us right now.”
Corter’s company produces a variety of shutters including standard, cutout doors, and arches. She agrees that diesel is directly impacting production costs, saying, “Yes, 100%.”
