Advocacy Group Criticizes Rep. Mike Lawler Over Economic Policies
Empire State Voices, an advocacy organization representing working-class citizens in New York, has launched a $7,000 advertising campaign aimed at Rep. Mike Lawler. The campaign accuses him of contributing to increased living costs.
Dubbed the “Mike Spike,” these advertisements appear in newspapers throughout Lawler’s Hudson Valley district. Additionally, mobile billboards and a banner are displayed over Interstate 287, further amplifying the message.
The campaign highlights three specific actions by Lawler that are believed to have caused price increases: his support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), endorsement of former President Trump’s tariff policy, and backing of the military engagement in Iran.
According to a report by Time Magazine in July, 450,000 New Yorkers have lost their health insurance due to cuts in Medicaid and the failure to renew Affordable Care Act subsidies under the OBBB. These reductions are intended to finance tax breaks for affluent individuals and large corporations.
Lawler has expressed approval for the OBBB, describing it as a model for responsible governance. Nationwide, approximately 7.5 million Medicaid recipients are expected to lose health coverage as a result of this legislation.
Additionally, Lawler has spoken favorably of Trump’s tariff policy, characterizing it as a temporary measure meant to achieve long-term benefits.
However, a recent report from the Democratic members of the Joint House Economic Committee indicates that New Yorkers spent an additional $310 on groceries last year due to these tariffs, marking a 4% increase since Trump’s return to office.
The same report reveals that New Yorkers are paying $432 more for gasoline, directly attributed to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Lawler has shown support for this war, having voted against a war powers resolution that could have helped bring it to an end.
Dylan Wheeler, the Senior Organizing Director of Empire State Voices, claims that Lawler prioritizes media appearances over the needs of his constituents.
“We need our Congressman to start supporting meaningful legislation to lower our costs, and stop putting partisan politics ahead of what’s best for New Yorkers,” Wheeler stated.
Lawler is currently seeking a third term in office, with Cait Conley running as his Democratic challenger.
