Maine Senate Seat Flips as Troy Jackson Unseats Susan Collins
In a significant political shift, Democrat Troy Jackson triumphed over Republican incumbent Susan Collins in Maine’s Senate race on Tuesday night.
Collins, who has maintained her seat in the predominantly Democratic-voting state for three decades, faced formidable challenges this election cycle. Her campaign struggled under the pressures of a disfavored Republican president, economic concerns, and accusations of involvement in a pay-to-play scandal.
Jackson, whose background as a logger informed his political approach, concentrated his campaign on addressing cost-of-living concerns. This focus resonated with voters, as evidenced by his remarks during his victory speech in the early hours of Wednesday.
“If you’re watching this after getting home from a shift, or sitting at the table wondering how you’re going to pay the next bill, I want you to hear something very clearly,” Jackson stated. “You are sending somebody to Washington who knows exactly what that feels like.”
As of Wednesday morning, with approximately 90% of ballots tallied, Jackson had secured 54% of the vote.
Collins also faced backlash for her 2018 vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Despite her pro-choice stance, Kavanaugh’s pivotal role in overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022 became a point of contention for many voters.
In a statement, Collins expressed her gratitude for her time serving the people of Maine. “It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Maine in the United States Senate,” she wrote. “I’m proud of all I have been able to accomplish for our state and for our country in the past 30 years. I called Troy Jackson tonight to congratulate him and to assure him that my staff and I will work to ensure a smooth transition.”
Despite the late hour, Collins’ supporters remained at a Bangor watch party until 1 a.m., hoping to hear from her, though she did not address them.
