Controversial Claims Surface in Michigan Governor Race

In the race for Michigan’s governor, two Republican candidates are asserting that the 2020 presidential election was unjustly taken from former President Donald Trump.
According to the Midland Daily News, during an event on April 13, Representative John James and State Senator Aric Nesbitt accused Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of unfairly influencing the election outcome to favor President Joe Biden. Benson, a Democrat, is also running for governor.
State Senator Nesbitt boldly declared, “Trump won Michigan” in the 2020 election. Meanwhile, James, who had contended for a U.S. Senate seat that year, suggested that the election was also misappropriated from him.
James posed a question to the attendees, “Who here believes that Jocelyn Benson … screwed Trump in 2020?” He continued, “Who here believes the president won in 2020? All right, well, if you do, I outperformed President Trump in 2020, and there are five judges that agree with you that Jocelyn Benson had her thumb on the scale in 2020.”
In the 2020 election, Biden surpassed Trump in Michigan by over 154,000 votes, while Senator Gary Peters defeated James by 92,000 votes.
Despite Trump’s ongoing assertions that his loss was due to electioneering and widespread voter fraud, these claims have been repeatedly challenged and disproven through various lawsuits and independent reports.
Following the 2020 election, Trump criticized Benson, labeling her a “rogue Secretary of State” due to her endorsement of mail-in voting. This criticism led to armed pro-Trump demonstrators protesting outside Benson’s residence and making threatening remarks.
Benson addressed the situation on X, stating, “The individuals gathered outside my home targeted me as Michigan’s chief election officer. But their threats were actually aimed at the 5.5 million Michigan citizens who voted in this fall’s election, seeking to overturn their will. They will not succeed in doing so.”
The Republican primary is scheduled for August 4, where James and Nesbitt will compete for a chance to run in the gubernatorial election.
