Trump Administration Proposes $250 Bill Featuring Trump’s Likeness

Proposed $250 Bill Featuring Trump’s Likeness Sparks Debate

In a move that could see President Donald Trump’s image on a new $250 bill, the Trump administration is eyeing the country’s 250th anniversary as an opportunity for this currency innovation. The proposal hinges on Congress passing legislation that would permit a living president’s portrait to grace U.S. currency, a step that current law prohibits.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the proposal during a briefing at the White House, emphasizing that while preparations are underway, compliance with existing laws remains paramount. “It’s all in the hands of… Capitol Hill,” Bessent remarked, noting that congressional authorization is essential. He further stated there was nothing inappropriate about featuring the sitting president on a commemorative bill, especially on such a milestone anniversary.

Last year, a legislative push led by GOP Representative Joe Wilson from South Carolina aimed to mandate the printing of $250 notes with Trump’s image. Although the bill has yet to advance, its introduction laid the groundwork for the current discussions. The Washington Post reported that Trump appointees initiated the drafting of these notes, complete with mock-ups of the president’s likeness, which Bessent showcased during his briefing.

If successful, this initiative would mark the first time a living individual’s likeness appeared on U.S. currency since 1866, as documented by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This follows a previous decision by the Treasury Department to include Trump’s signature on all newly printed money, diverging from the tradition of using only the treasury secretary and treasurer’s signatures.

The proposal is part of a broader trend of President Trump’s administration imprinting his brand on government structures and initiatives, including potential new commemorative items such as a passport, coin, and National Parks pass bearing his likeness.

Across Washington, Trump’s influence is visible, with his image displayed prominently over the Justice Department and his name added to iconic institutions like the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Institute of Peace. Policy initiatives, such as the “Trump Accounts,” further underscore his administration’s commitment to self-branding.
