In an unprecedented event for Spain’s Protestant community, the Festival of Hope drew thousands to Madrid’s Vistalegre Palace on May 30 and 31. Organized by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) with the aid of local churches, this massive gathering was a significant demonstration of unity and vitality among Evangelicals in the region, as reported by Diario Cristiano Internacional.

The festival, led by evangelist Franklin Graham, showcased the efforts of nearly 900 Evangelical churches across 15 denominations. Graham noted on his platforms, “Nearly 900 Evangelical churches representing 15 denominations from across the region partnered with us for this festival.”

Preparation for the event spanned over a year and a half, involving extensive training in evangelism and discipleship aimed at engaging new believers. This groundwork paid off as approximately 12,600 attendees filled the venue on the first day, with about 2,000 more unable to enter due to capacity constraints.

Media Spotlight on Evangelical Growth

The festival’s impact reached beyond religious circles, capturing the attention of mainstream media outlets like El País and Diario Público. These publications reported on the festival’s large turnout, estimated at over 10,000 participants daily, and explored the rising influence of Evangelical communities, particularly those with Latin American roots, in Madrid’s religious landscape.

The media also focused on Franklin Graham, not just for his leadership in the church, but for his known political and social stances in the U.S., which added another layer of interest to the event.

Gospel-Centric Message Amid Secular Narratives

Despite various interpretations by secular media, the festival maintained a strong focus on the core message of the Gospel. Franklin Graham emphasized essential Christian beliefs, stating, “We have all sinned. The Bible says, ‘There is none righteous, not even one,’ but God loved us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for our sins.”

Graham’s call to faith and repentance received a significant response, with hundreds coming forward to begin their spiritual journey with the guidance of local church counselors.

Cultural and Musical Expressions

The festival’s appeal was enhanced by a rich musical lineup, featuring renowned worship leader Michael W. Smith and psalmist Charity Gayle, along with local talents like the Living Water Gospel Choir and Sing it!

BGEA’s global mission is to affirm the message of salvation as a foundational answer to modern-day crises of identity and purpose. For Spain’s Evangelical community, this event marks the beginning of a renewed period of outreach and discipleship.
