Republican candidate Doug Ollivant has been at the center of controversy for sharing outdated maps of Virginia’s 7th District, where he is running for Congress.
Ollivant is aiming to represent the 7th District, which currently includes Fredericksburg, Bowling Green, and Culpeper. His opponent in the race is Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman, the current incumbent.
Since June 2026, the Ollivant campaign has released at least four social media videos that incorrectly depict the district’s boundaries. The maps shown extend the district southward to cover a large portion of central Virginia, reflecting boundaries that were changed in 2021.
One of these videos is actively promoted as a paid advertisement on Facebook, indicating the campaign’s investment in the misleading representation.
Ollivant, who has previously served as the director for Iraq at the U.S. National Security Council under the Bush administration in 2008, is portrayed in these videos as a newcomer to politics, despite his extensive background.
On August 4, Ollivant will face competition in the Republican primary from Pentecostal minister Philip Harding and pastor Ricky Smithers.
The 7th District race is widely regarded as one of the most competitive in the 2026 House elections.
