Sunday marked a poignant moment—the 57th anniversary of the Abortion Act’s implementation in the UK, first enacted in 1968.
Since that time, the procedure has resulted in the termination of approximately 10,741,486 pregnancies across the country.
Statistics reveal that, currently, an unborn child is aborted roughly every two minutes, adding up to 31 terminations per hour.
Recent data indicates that abortion rates have reached unprecedented levels.
In 2022, England and Wales recorded 252,122 abortions, the highest number ever documented.
Meanwhile, Scotland reported 18,207 terminations in 2023, and Northern Ireland experienced a 23.53% increase, totaling 2,168 abortions by March 2023.
This significant rise in abortion figures in England and Wales parallels the advent of ‘DIY’ home abortion services, which began in March 2020.
These home services have been linked to a number of troubling issues since their introduction.
The Department of Health and Social Care’s official data shows a substantial rise of 37,253 abortions in 2022 compared to the previous year, marking the largest annual increase on record.
Catherine Robinson, a spokesperson for Right To Life UK, voiced her concerns: “The UK’s abortion law is failing both women and unborn babies. It is a national tragedy that 10,741,486 lives have been lost since the 1967 Abortion Act came into effect, each one a unique and valuable human being who was denied the right to life.”
“Every one of these abortions represents a collective failure of our society to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unplanned pregnancies.”
The general public seems to support heightened protections for unborn children and better support systems for women facing unplanned pregnancies.
Surveys indicate that a mere 1% of the public endorse abortion being available up to delivery, while 70% of women prefer reducing the abortion time limit to 20 weeks’ gestation.
Robinson called for both reflection and action on this anniversary: “While we may pause to commemorate this tragedy, this day also serves as a call to action for people around the country to renew their efforts to do everything they can to help ensure more lives are saved from abortion in the future.”
She urged individuals to reach out to MPs to push for stronger legal protections for unborn children, volunteer at pregnancy support centers, and engage in wider pro-life movements: “By being proactive and taking action, every single one of us can be part of building a pro-life nation where we protect and defend the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death.”
