The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has prompted a widespread call for peace, with global religious and political figures urging for dialogue and restraint. Amid the turmoil, Pope Leo has appealed for “sincere dialogue” to prevent further hostilities.
Speaking during the Jubilee of Sport at St Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo highlighted the need for responsible actions and reasoning, stating, “No one should ever threaten another’s existence.” He emphasized the importance of building a non-nuclear world through “respectful encounters and sincere dialogue” to achieve lasting peace grounded in justice and fraternity.
Pastor Greg Laurie has called for prayers for Israel as it faces missile attacks from Iran, citing a scripture for comfort: “You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat” (Isaiah 25:4).
Evangelist Franklin Graham took to social media to support Israel’s defensive actions, noting the ongoing threats from Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He recounted his recent experiences in Israel, where he sought shelter from missile attacks, and urged believers to “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6).
Amid these developments, the World Prayer Centre and Embrace the Middle East have both issued urgent requests for prayers, urging for an end to the violence and a return to peace and compassion.
In response to the heightened tensions, the UK is sending RAF jets to the region, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer advocating for diplomatic engagement to prevent a full-scale conflict. The European Union has also expressed its concern, with Vice-President Kaja Kallas stating, “The EU expresses its deepest concern at the dangerous escalation that threatens to destabilise the Middle East following Israeli strikes on Iran and Iran’s response. Diplomacy must prevail.”
