President Trump and key officials paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, a significant figure in the conservative movement. At a memorial service, Trump described Kirk as “a martyr now for American freedom.” Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA, was recognized for his influence in the MAGA movement.

  • 🎧 The memorial took place at a packed NFL stadium, where attendees wore “freedom” T-shirts, reflecting the shirt Kirk wore when he was killed. Speeches highlighted that his assassination amplified his message rather than silencing it. Trump’s address included topics like the 2020 election and tariffs.
  • ➡️ Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, expressed forgiveness towards her husband’s accused killer, sharing her emotional message with the crowd. More details on her speech are available here.
  • ➡️ Tens of thousands attended the memorial, showcasing widespread support. See photos from the event.

In recent social media activity, Trump urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to target his political adversaries. He called out figures like James Comey and Adam Schiff, alleging guilt without specifics.

  • 🎧 Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump discussed targeting political foes. NPR’s Ryan Lucas notes that Trump’s latest message is “arguably the most direct” in urging the Justice Department to pursue specific individuals. The call for action followed a prosecutor’s resignation amid pressures to charge a Trump opponent.

France and several Western countries are set to recognize a Palestinian state today. This move, supported by leaders advocating a two-state solution, coincides with the U.N. General Assembly in New York City. The assembly is expected to increase pressure on the U.S. and Israel as tensions in Gaza continue.

  • 🎧 This recognition has been welcomed by Palestinian leaders, though many in the West Bank argue it doesn’t change the challenging conditions since a recent Hamas attack. Arrests and killings by Israeli forces have surged, and work permits for Palestinians have been revoked. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called the recognition a reward for terrorism and hinted at possible retaliation post-U.N. address and Trump meeting.

NPR’s series Cost of Living: The Price We Pay explores the causes of price increases and people’s responses to inflation.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 51% increase in ground beef prices since February 2020. Americans’ taste for beef remains strong, but changing. The beef industry is influenced by several factors:

  • 🍔 Droughts have hindered cattle farming, leading to record beef cow slaughter in 2022.
  • 🍔 The slaughter resulted in a meat surplus, lowering prices and discouraging herd replenishment.
  • 🍔 High operational costs deter ranchers from expanding herds.
  • 🍔 Foreign beef imports are decreasing, with high tariffs on Brazilian beef and livestock restrictions from Mexico.

Discover more on how the beef price surge is affecting consumers and businesses, and learn why grocery prices remain elevated. Follow the series for insights on the housing market’s impact on families here.
