Ohio Representative Josh Williams, who is vying for a congressional seat in the state’s 9th District, has sparked discussions with his recent comments on tax policy. Williams acknowledged that the new state budget favors the wealthiest Americans by providing them with tax relief.
Speaking to the Statehouse News Bureau on September 12, Williams stated, “We just provided tax relief to some of the richest Americans in Ohio in the last budget. I supported that.”
Williams’ remarks align with ongoing Republican efforts to defend the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), legislation that reduces Medicaid funding to facilitate tax reductions for the affluent. This has presented challenges for Republicans in persuading voters of their commitment to addressing the needs of working families. For further details, refer to the report by PBS NewsHour.
The recently passed Ohio state budget, crafted by a Republican-dominated legislature, introduces a flat tax benefiting higher-income earners while increasing taxes for many workers. Similar to OBBB, the budget compensates for reduced revenue by cutting funds allocated to environmental and healthcare initiatives.
Democratic state Rep. Karen Brownlee criticized the budget, remarking, “The Republican supermajority made a choice with this budget, and now billionaires are walking away with your taxpayer dollars in their pockets.”
Williams has also expressed his support for the OBBB and criticized his Democratic challenger, Rep. Marcy Kaptur, for her opposition. On social media platform X, he asserted, “Democrats like Marcy Kaptur would rather raise taxes on the working class and keep illegals on Medicaid than just give President Trump a win on the One Big Beautiful Bill.” See his post here.
Contrary to Williams’ perspective, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported on August 11 that the law would cost the poorest 10% of Americans approximately $1,200 annually, while the wealthiest 10% would see gains of about $13,600 each year. Moreover, the law is projected to strip health insurance from an estimated 13.7 million Americans, with no undocumented individuals affected.
DCCC spokesperson Katie Smith criticized Williams, stating, “Josh Williams admits that his priority is giving tax cuts to the richest Americans. Williams puts billionaires and special interests before middle-class Ohio families, which is why Ohioans can’t trust him to work for them.”
The race for Ohio’s 9th District is anticipated to be competitive for the upcoming 2026 elections, drawing attention from both major political parties.
