Relief Efforts Intensify After Devastating Earthquake Rocks Myanmar and Thailand

A massive earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has caused widespread devastation in central Myanmar and parts of Thailand, quickly followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock. The natural disaster has claimed over 1,700 lives, leaving tens of thousands more injured and homeless.
Christian humanitarian organisations like Samaritan’s Purse and Christian Aid are at the forefront of the relief operations, leveraging their long-established presence in Myanmar. Samaritan’s Purse, which has been active in the region since Cyclone Nargis in 2008, is mobilizing a Disaster Assistance Response Team from Vietnam and Cambodia to establish a comprehensive Emergency Field Hospital.
Equipped with a pharmacy, emergency room, laboratory, in-patient wards, and two operating theatres, the facility represents Samaritan’s Purse’s largest hospital model. A DC-8 jet is en route from Greensboro, North Carolina, carrying 28 specialists alongside the hospital equipment.
Additional emergency supplies, including water filtration systems, shelter materials, hygiene kits, and flashlights, are also being airlifted by the organisation in the coming days.
Franklin Graham, President of Samaritan’s Purse, commented, “This devastating earthquake has rocked Myanmar and Thailand, killing at least 1,700 people and leaving entire communities in ruins. Now, families are grieving the loss of loved ones and many are left with nothing—sleeping outside in the elements as aftershocks continue. Samaritan’s Purse is responding in Jesus’ Name to bring relief to those who are hurting. Please pray for all those affected and for our teams as they serve.”
Christian Aid is also coordinating relief efforts, working through local partners to assess the damage. The situation has worsened with the bursting of the Kyaukse Kinta Dam in Mandalay, leading to further flooding.
Christian Aid is focusing on a community-driven response, releasing emergency funds to provide clean water, food parcels, temporary shelters, and cash assistance. The organisation is calling for donations via its emergency giving page and is encouraging global prayer support:
“God, our strength and our refuge, we pray to you for the people of Myanmar. We hold in mind those who are injured or have been bereaved. We ask your protection for everyone awaiting rescue. May those who have lost homes and belongings be comforted. May emergency workers and medical staff be safe as they pour their energy into saving the lives of others. May the international community respond quickly to support those affected. God, our strength and our refuge, be with our global neighbours today.”
With search and rescue operations ongoing, the number of casualties is expected to rise. Myanmar, already struggling with poverty and displacement, faces compounded challenges due to this natural disaster.
Julie Mehigan, Head of Asia, Middle East & Europe for Christian Aid, highlighted the nation’s vulnerabilities, stating: “Myanmar is one of the lowest-income countries in the world. Even before this heartbreaking earthquake, we know conflict and displacement has left countless people in real need. Every prayer and every gift will bring hope to people hit by disaster.”
