The song’s appeal is intriguing, especially in today’s climate where marriage rates are declining and casual relationships are prevalent. Despite modern views that suggest it’s ‘embarrassing’ to have a boyfriend, RAYE’s song, which literally pleads for commitment, is resonating strongly.
This might be because today’s young adults are considered the loneliest generation. Reflecting this sentiment, RAYE sings about her solitude, “I’m doing lonely acrobatics, unzipping my dress at 2am / And I’m tired of living like this / If [my husband] doesn’t find me now I’m gonna die alone.” The sense of isolation is a counterpoint to the individualistic freedom celebrated since the 1960s, revealing a potential renewed interest in the idea of marriage.
RAYE isn’t longing for just any marriage—she desires one like her parents’, who met in a church setting. In a biblical perspective, husbands are reminded of their role in love as stated in Ephesians 5:25: “love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
