A groundbreaking television series delving into the life of Jesus Christ is set to air on BBC Television and BBC iPlayer in 2027. This innovative four-part series will blend historical research with archaeological discoveries to provide a comprehensive exploration of the world in which Jesus lived.

Commissioned by the BBC’s Head of Specialist Factual, Jack Bootle, and Head of Religion and Ethics for Television, Daisy Scalchi, the series is produced by Wonderhood Studios. It aims to offer new insights into the historical context of Jesus’ life, supported by recent scholarship and technological advancements.

Reflecting on the initiative, Daisy Scalchi stated, “This series is testament to the BBC’s commitment to religious programming that deepens our understanding of each other and the world around us.” The series promises to reexamine Jesus, described by Scalchi as “one of the most recognised and influential figures in human history.”

Using cinematic storytelling combined with historical analysis, the series will delve into the political, social, cultural, and religious backdrop of Jesus’ time, while exploring the beginnings of the Christian movement. Contributions will come from prominent historians and scholars from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds, illuminating the lasting impact of Jesus’ life.

At the helm of the production are executive producers Rory Wheeler, Samantha Anstiss, and Tom Garton, with Annabel Hobley as showrunner and Owen Gower directing the series. Garton emphasized that the series will place Jesus within the historical framework that influenced his ministry and the rise of Christianity.

According to Garton, the series aims to enhance viewers’ understanding of the first-century context, covering the people, conflicts, places, and beliefs of the time, using “ambitious” cinematic storytelling. He noted, “Few lives have shaped the world as profoundly as that of Jesus Christ and, for Christians, he is far more than a figure of history: he is the Son of God.”
