Peace Advocates Targeted in Deadly Ambush in Manipur
In a tragic turn of events, three Baptist pastors were killed in an ambush while returning from a peace conference aimed at fostering dialogue between tribal Christian communities in Manipur, India. The attack occurred on Wednesday, May 13, along the Imphal-Tamenglong highway, leaving five others injured.
Christian organizations, regional governments, and community groups across Northeast India voiced their condemnation of the violence, yet the perpetrators remain unidentified amidst competing claims.
The victims, senior leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association India (TBAI), had attended a conference in Churachandpur and were en route to Kangpokpi when their convoy was attacked. This incident disrupts ongoing reconciliation efforts between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities, both predominantly Christian, in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur.
Victims and Responses
The Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) quickly confirmed the deaths of Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou. The injured were transported to Shija Hospitals for medical care. EFI General Secretary Rev. Vijayesh Lal called the ambush “deeply disturbing and tragic” and urged for a swift investigation.
Rev. Dr. Sitlhou, a key figure in peace initiatives, was mourned across communities. Despite ethnic tensions, his efforts for reconciliation were widely recognized and appreciated.
Escalating Tensions in Manipur
Ethnic violence has plagued Manipur since May 2023, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The recent deterioration in relations between the Kuki-Zo and Naga tribes has further complicated the situation, with armed groups like the NSCN-IM and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) operating in the region.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding responsibility for the ambush, with Kuki-Zo organizations blaming the ZUF-Kamson faction, while ZUF denied involvement. The United Naga Council condemned the attack and alleged subsequent hostilities.
Government and Community Reactions
Manipur’s Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the attack and promised to cover medical costs for the injured. The state government pledged to pursue justice for the victims and called for an end to violence along community lines.
Christian organizations across India, including the United Christian Forum of North East India and the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India, expressed grief and called for unity. Calls for peace and reconciliation were echoed by various religious and political leaders.
The incident has heightened tensions in Manipur, resulting in blockades and shutdowns by various groups. As the state grapples with unresolved conflicts, the deaths of the pastors underscore the fragile state of peace efforts in the region.
