As Islam gains prominence in the UK, the Evangelical Alliance is urging Christians to engage more deeply with their Muslim neighbors. This call to action highlights the importance of overcoming fear and indifference amidst the growing visibility of Islam in public life.

The discussion unfolded during a webinar titled “Islam: challenges, questions and gospel opportunities,” part of a series examining Christian nationalism and Islam’s role in British society.

Key speakers included Dr. Andy Bannister, the director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity, and John Ghanim, a Yemeni-born convert from Islam to Christianity.

Dr. Bannister noted the increasing visibility of Islam due to demographic changes and more vocal Muslim communities, stressing that the topic cannot be ignored with about four million Muslims currently in the UK.

“Islam is certainly more vocal…it’s more confident,” he remarked, indicating a rise in Muslim representation in public spaces and media.

He pointed to figures like London Mayor Sadiq Khan as examples of Islam’s growing influence.

Understanding and Engaging with Islam

The webinar addressed the hesitancy among Christians to discuss Islam, with Dr. Bannister highlighting the lack of preparation in engaging with Muslim communities compared to the training often found in mosques.

He said, “Islam is a very public faith and … they’re a faith that believe in communicating what they see to be the truth, but immediately then we [Christians] get a bit nervous.”

Dr. Bannister also underscored the significance of learning from former Muslims, who provide unique insights into engaging with Muslim communities.

Theological Differences and Political Context

The discussion also explored theological differences, cautioning against assuming Christianity and Islam are similar. Dr. Bannister emphasized that while both religions share some themes, their worldviews are fundamentally different.

He explained Christianity’s view of God as relational and loving, contrasting it with Islam’s understanding, which emphasizes obedience and submission.

In discussing Islam’s influence in politics, Dr. Bannister urged Christians to view issues beyond partisan politics, noting that many societal challenges are deeper than political policies.

A Call for Radical Christianity

Dr. Bannister called for a return to “radical Christianity,” encouraging believers to embrace a faith that, while potentially costly, is more aligned with the teachings and sacrifices found in the gospel.

John Ghanim shared his journey from Islam to Christianity, highlighting the personal cost but profound joy in embracing his faith. Despite the challenges, he urged Christians to view Muslim communities as a mission field.

He said: “Maybe God brought them to Europe to hear the Gospel,” emphasizing the need for boldness in sharing the message of Christ.

Practical Steps for Engagement

The webinar concluded with practical advice for Christians, urging them to build relationships, offer hospitality, and share their faith confidently. Dr. Bannister encouraged starting with small acts of kindness and connection.

He advised, “If the Muslim in your community, like in my case, runs the local convenience store, don’t just buy your milk and run. Take the opportunity to introduce yourself and say, ‘Hi.’”

By equipping themselves with knowledge and building genuine connections, Christians can effectively engage with and understand their Muslim neighbors.
