In a surprising turn of events, counter-terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe, a former Cabinet minister. Authorities have shifted the investigative focus following the discovery of new evidence.
According to Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE), the decision was made after “new information has come to light during what has been a dynamic and complex investigation.”
Investigators suspect that the 78-year-old Widdecombe was attacked a day before her body was found in her Devon home last Thursday. A 28-year-old man from Rotherham was initially arrested on murder charges and has since been re-arrested under suspicion of terrorism-related activities.
Initially, Devon and Cornwall Police managed the case and had not linked the incident to terrorism. Asst Chief Constable Matt Longman emphasized that detectives were keeping an open mind regarding the motive and stated there was no evidence of a political motivation.
CTPSE is now spearheading the investigation, with Laurence Taylor, head of national counter-terrorism policing, stating: “Building on the progress made by our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall police, we now have new information and evidence that means counter-terrorism policing is now leading the investigation.”
Taylor added, “We are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police.”
The deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, commented on Monday, stating: “A lot of journalists must now apologise to Nigel [Farage] and us at Reform. You know who you are.”
Over the weekend, Nigel Farage visited Widdecombe’s residence to lay flowers, remarking on the increasing dangers faced by public figures, especially in politics.
Ann Widdecombe, known for her devout Christian faith and political career, represented Maidstone as a Conservative MP for 23 years before joining the Brexit Party. In 2023, she became Reform UK’s spokesperson for Immigration and Justice.
Widdecombe gained widespread recognition through her TV appearances on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She was a staunch advocate for causes such as free speech, the rights of the unborn, and the plight of persecuted Christians, while opposing assisted suicide and challenging transgender ideology.
