Washington Archdiocese Removes Exorcist Over UFO Comments

In a recent development that highlights the intersection of faith and modern phenomena, the Archdiocese of Washington has distanced itself from a veteran exorcist. Monsignor Stephen Rossetti, who has served as an exorcist for nearly two decades, has been removed following his comments linking UFO sightings to demonic activity.
Cardinal Robert McElroy, in an announcement made on June 3, confirmed the removal of Rossetti from his role. The decision comes after Rossetti shared his views in an online video, suggesting a connection between unidentified flying objects and demonic entities. Rossetti, hailing from the Diocese of Syracuse, New York, had been an exorcist in Washington for 19 years.
Additionally, the Archdiocese has severed ties with the St Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal, a non-profit led by Rossetti. This organization, based in Washington, offers spiritual education and training for various religious groups and individuals.
The catalyst for this decision was a video uploaded to YouTube on May 29, where Rossetti expressed his belief that “many, if not most, [UFO] sightings are, in fact, demons.” He elaborated by stating that these entities possess capabilities beyond human ability, such as extreme speed.
In response to these comments, Cardinal McElroy issued a statement emphasizing that Rossetti’s views “gravely undermine the Church’s very precise teaching on the devil, demons, and exorcism.” The cardinal also noted concerns regarding the St Michael Center’s “recent use of social media,” though specifics were not provided.
Reacting to his removal, Rossetti expressed his disappointment but acknowledged the concerns raised. He stated, “I ask forgiveness for any ways that I have not been faithful to the teachings of the Church’s magisterium, particularly in the cited video on ‘aliens and the demonic’.
Reflecting on his tenure, Rossetti expressed gratitude for his years of service, thanking the archdiocese for its support. “I am grateful for 19 years of ministering in the Archdiocese of Washington as its exorcist and I thank the archdiocese for its support and blessing all these years,” he added.
Despite the disassociation, Rossetti mentioned that the St Michael Center intends to continue its work elsewhere. “The St Michael Center plans to continue its ministry elsewhere,” he confirmed.
Following the controversy, the YouTube video that led to the archdiocese’s decision was made private. This move by the Archdiocese of Washington clearly underscores their intention to align strictly with official Church teachings and interpretations.
