Israeli Soldiers Sentenced for Desecrating Religious Statue in Lebanon
In a recent incident that has drawn widespread attention, two soldiers from the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) have received short prison sentences for their actions involving a religious statue in occupied Lebanon. The soldiers were found guilty of placing a cigarette into the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue, prompting outrage from local and international communities.
This event follows a similar occurrence last month when IDF soldiers were caught on camera damaging a Jesus statue in the same area. Both incidents took place in Debel, a Christian village in Lebanon, highlighting ongoing tensions between military forces and local religious communities.
As a consequence of their actions, the soldier responsible for placing the cigarette was sentenced to three weeks in military prison. Meanwhile, the soldier who captured the incident in a photograph received a two-week sentence. These penalties are consistent with those imposed on soldiers involved in the earlier desecration of the crucifix, who were sentenced to a month in military prison and removed from active combat roles.
The Israeli authorities have publicly condemned these acts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his disapproval, stating he was “stunned and saddened” by the behavior, and emphasized his condemnation by saying, “I condemn the act in the strongest terms.”
An IDF spokesperson echoed this sentiment, noting the incident was viewed “with great severity” and reaffirming the IDF’s commitment to respecting religious freedoms and the sanctity of holy sites. The spokesperson added that soldiers receive regular briefings on conducting themselves appropriately around religious sites and symbols before entering such areas.
Father Fadi Felfeli, the parish priest of Debel, spoke to the BBC about the incident, stating it “shows that there are individuals within the army that lack ethics and values and are bigoted.”
These actions have further strained relations in a region where Israeli operations, targeting the militant group Hezbollah, have sometimes resulted in civilian casualties. In March, a Catholic priest was tragically killed by an IDF tank shell while aiding parishioners.
