Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the United Bible Societies (UBS) reaffirmed its dedication to Scripture accessibility for younger generations with a declaration released during a significant assembly in Jakarta. This initiative highlights a commitment to addressing the spiritual needs of today’s youth amid global uncertainty.

The declaration, titled “The Bible for Tomorrow: A Global Commitment to Future Christian Generations”, was unveiled at the anniversary event held from May 6–11 and reached a global audience through an online platform. It reflects UBS’s founding mission of “the Bible for everyone” and addresses a rise in spiritual interest among young people facing modern-day challenges.

UBS, which was officially founded in 1946 post-World War II but traces its origins back to the early 19th century, now operates in over 240 countries and territories. The organization has played a crucial role in translating over 70% of the world’s Bibles, making Scripture accessible to more than 6.2 billion people in their native languages.

Dirk Gevers, the Secretary General, expressed gratitude for the organization’s rich history and future goals. “We give thanks for God’s faithfulness and for the countless people who have made the Bible available across languages, cultures, and generations since the beginning of the 19th century, when our global Bible movement started,” he stated. “We believe the Bible continues to offer hope, truth, and direction for young people and for all who seek meaning in a complex world.”

The declaration was ceremoniously presented to youth leaders such as Albert Barrero from the Colombian Bible Society and Sonia Irankunda from the Bible Society of Burundi. Youth representatives from the Indonesian Bible Society were also part of this symbolic gesture, underscoring a commitment to future generations.

A Generation Searching for Direction

Amidst global instability, young people today often feel “unanchored,” as noted in the declaration. Despite these challenges, there is a noted increase in spiritual curiosity and engagement among youth, with many turning towards the Bible for answers to profound questions about truth, belonging, and morality.

The declaration emphasizes that “the Bible offers an anchor of enduring values, a source of unchanging hope, and a narrative that speaks into the deepest questions of the human search for truth, belonging, justice, and peace.” UBS has observed a rise in Bible engagement through youth-focused initiatives, providing a foundation for young individuals exploring identity and purpose.

Six Commitments

The declaration outlines six core commitments to guide future efforts. These include: relying on spiritual dependence through Scripture and prayer; ensuring universal access by overcoming barriers of geography and literacy; and promoting deep Bible engagement through reflection and community involvement.

Additionally, UBS pledges to respect cultural diversity by supporting translations suited to local contexts and to directly serve churches with interconfessional support. Lastly, it aims to integrate Bible engagement with compassion, healing, and justice, following “the footsteps of Jesus.”

A Call to the Global Church

UBS invites churches and Christian organizations worldwide to join in this mission, framing the declaration as a shared responsibility. The hope is for future generations to view Scripture as a wellspring of wisdom and hope and to participate in a vibrant, diverse, and loving church community.

The declaration concludes with a pledge: “With humility and confidence in God’s faithfulness, we, a global Fellowship of 156 Bible Societies, dedicate ourselves anew to the vision entrusted to us: the Bible for everyone, now and for generations yet to come.”
