At a recent event in Michigan, Representative Tom Barrett brought together small business owners to discuss the implications of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a Republican budget initiative signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4. The event took place on August 20 and included notable attendees such as prolific Republican donor and campaign consultant Scott Greenlee.
The roundtable, promoted as a gathering of “small business owners from across the community,” aimed to highlight the benefits of the new budget law. Barrett shared on X, “We are taking historic action to protect our small businesses, cut costs for working families, and give a much needed boost to Michigan’s economy,” accompanied by images of the event featuring Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
Scott Greenlee, founder of Greenlee Consulting in Grand Rapids, was one of the key participants at the roundtable. Barrett acknowledged Greenlee’s presence in a separate post on X, naming Greenlee Consulting as a representative business at the event.
Greenlee, with a history of political involvement, has contributed $200,000 since 2010 to aid various Republican campaigns in Michigan, including the gubernatorial campaign of Tudor Dixon. His firm’s activities, as disclosed in campaign finance reports, include “consulting” and “consulting on robocalls.” Moreover, Greenlee has personally donated $1,916.10 to Barrett’s campaign this year alone.
Additionally, Greenlee manages the Patriots Fund, a Michigan-registered political action committee. Notably, Representative Barrett is the only candidate endorsed by the Patriots Fund for the 2026 election.
Despite the tax cuts for small businesses included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, some critics point out that these savings might be negated by increasing prices and tariffs. The Detroit Regional Chamber noted, “About 242,000 small businesses import goods each year … and many are already struggling with rising costs and uncertainty.”
Barrett, representing Michigan’s 7th District, which encompasses a significant portion of Lansing, is seeking re-election next year. His seat is regarded as one of the more vulnerable among Republican incumbents.
