Nevada’s Gubernatorial Showdown: Ford vs. Lombardo in Tight Race

Nevada’s Gubernatorial Race: A High-Stakes Contest Between Ford and Lombardo

The upcoming gubernatorial election in Nevada is shaping up to be a closely monitored contest. Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford has emerged as the party’s nominee, set to challenge the current Republican Governor Joe Lombardo in this high-stakes race.

After securing the Democratic nomination by defeating five other candidates, Ford is focusing his campaign on critiquing Governor Lombardo’s governance. He highlights issues such as the increased costs of essentials like groceries, gas, housing, and healthcare, attributing these to Lombardo’s leadership. Additionally, Ford is linking Lombardo to former President Trump, whose endorsement of Lombardo comes amidst a decline in Trump’s popularity in Nevada.

Governor Lombardo, who easily surpassed six challengers in the Republican primary, has a track record of legislative achievements despite facing Democratic majorities in the state legislature. His notable accomplishments include a bipartisan bill aimed at improving school district accountability, revising criminal justice reforms following George Floyd’s death in 2020, and making strides towards more accessible housing. Lombardo also played a role in securing public funding for a new stadium for Major League Baseball’s Athletics, previously based in Oakland.

Although Lombardo has a significant campaign fund for the upcoming general election, financial resources alone won’t determine the outcome in Nevada. Effective messaging and voter engagement are crucial, and this is where Ford might have an edge. The powerful Culinary Union, representing Nevada’s hospitality workers, endorsed Ford last month. With around 60,000 members in the state, the union is a formidable force in voter mobilization, integrating polling sites into casinos and resorts to facilitate voting for hospitality workers.

As both candidates prepare for the November election, Nevada’s gubernatorial race is considered a “toss-up” by The Cook Political Report, reflecting the competitive nature of this pivotal contest. For more details on the race, visit The Cook Political Report.
