Sen. Blumenthal Reflects on Lindsey Graham’s Legacy and Their Collaborations

Senator Blumenthal Reflects on Lindsey Graham’s Legacy and Collaborations

In a recent conversation with NPR’s A Martinez, Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut shed light on his final interactions and collaborative efforts with the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Blumenthal, a Democrat, shared insights into Graham’s enduring impact on U.S. foreign policy and their bipartisan endeavors.

Blumenthal recounted his last conversation with Graham, who was “absolutely exultant” while in Kyiv. The two senators were finalizing a Russia sanctions bill intended to impose severe tariffs and sanctions on Russian oil purchasers. The bill aimed to curb Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine. “This is a big effing deal,” Graham reportedly expressed, celebrating the White House’s last-minute confirmation of support from then-President Trump.

Potential Impacts on U.S. Foreign Policy

Reflecting on Graham’s death, Blumenthal expressed hope that it would motivate lawmakers to pass the sanctions legislation, emphasizing the pivotal role it could play in pressuring Russia towards peace. “Ukraine has turned the tide on the battlefield,” he noted, highlighting the country’s recent strategic advantages.

Graham’s approach to foreign policy was notably interventionist, diverging from the “America First” perspective often associated with Trump. Blumenthal hopes this legacy will encourage a broader, non-isolationist stance in U.S. foreign policy, underscoring the importance of supporting Ukraine to prevent further aggression towards NATO allies.

Collaborations Beyond Foreign Policy

Beyond international issues, Blumenthal and Graham found common ground on domestic matters. They co-sponsored the EARN IT Act, advocating for changes to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to hold Big Tech accountable for online safety, particularly concerning children. Additionally, Graham supported gun violence protection measures, working with Blumenthal on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Despite their collaborations, Blumenthal acknowledged profound disagreements with Graham on various issues, including budget and taxation policies. However, he recognized Graham’s commitment to the Senate’s functionality and his willingness to cross party lines to achieve shared goals.

Graham’s Relationship with Trump

Graham’s alignment with Trump, despite initial criticisms, was a point of intrigue. Blumenthal refrained from speculating on Graham’s motivations, noting that their discussions rarely touched on Graham’s support for Trump. Blumenthal himself has been a vocal critic of Trump, describing him as a “grave danger to democracy.”

Senator Blumenthal’s reflections on Graham highlight the complexities of political partnerships, illustrating how bipartisan collaborations can persist amid significant ideological differences.
