Jim Desmond’s Campaign Involves Controversial Temecula Mayor

Republican candidate Jim Desmond is actively campaigning for Congress with Jessica Alexander, the mayor of Temecula, who is known for her polarizing statements regarding COVID mask mandates and the LGBTQ community.

In a Facebook post dated July 12, Desmond expressed gratitude to Mayor Alexander for her participation in a door-knocking event supporting his campaign. He stated, “Your leadership and commitment to our community mean so much.”

Back in 2021, amid her tenure on the Temecula City Council, Alexander stirred controversy by equating her choice to forgo wearing a face mask to Rosa Parks’ historic refusal to surrender her seat on a segregated bus. During a town council meeting, Alexander remarked, “[Parks] finally took a stand and moved to the front. I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus. I’m telling you, I feel like I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus!” Her comments received widespread criticism and prompted calls for her resignation, though she stood by her comparison. More details can be found here.

In a separate incident two years later, Alexander again provoked public outcry during a council meeting. She reacted negatively to a proclamation celebrating June as LGBTQ pride month, asserting, “We will eventually see MAPS [Minor Attracted Persons] be recognized under this flag,” in reference to the pride flag’s rainbow colors. She further suggested that the ‘plus’ in LGBTQ+ could encompass pedophiles and individuals involved in bestiality. The full account is available here.

It’s important to note that the position of mayor in Temecula is not decided by a public vote; rather, city council members select one of their peers to serve a one-year term. Alexander’s term as mayor is set to conclude on January 1, 2027.

Currently, Desmond is vying for a congressional seat in California’s 48th District. His opponent in the race is Marni von Wilpert, a member of the San Diego City Council.
