Maine Senator Susan Collins has recently faced scrutiny for criticizing the influx of out-of-state funding in her reelection campaign, while simultaneously preparing to garner significant financial support from a Hollywood fundraiser.
In a recent email to supporters, Collins’ campaign highlighted the financial influence Democrats are exerting in Maine. “Make no mistake: this is shaping up to be the biggest Senate race in the country,” the email stated. “Democrats are raising millions to take Susan down, flooding Maine with outside money from liberal elites in New York and California.”
Despite these claims, Collins will participate in a high-profile fundraising event on September 26 at the residence of Sherry Lansing, a Paramount executive. The gathering, co-hosted by Casey Wasserman, a renowned sports and entertainment figure, underscores Collins’ connection to influential political contributors. Details of the event were reported by the New York Times.
At this Hollywood fundraiser, attendees will pay between $3,500 and $10,000 each for entry. Collins is also anticipated to attend similar events in Northern California during this period.
Collins, noted for her opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which proposes Medicaid cuts, did help advance the bill out of committee, facilitating its progression. Rolling Stone highlighted that this vote came shortly after her super PAC benefited from a $2 million donation by New York billionaire Stephen A. Schwarzman.
As Collins gears up for a sixth term, Democrats view her as vulnerable, citing her inconsistent voting record and affiliations with wealthy donors. “Susan Collins has had this political charade that she’s played for a really long time,” said Devon Murphy-Anderson, Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party, to MSNBC. “She votes with the GOP and with Trump when they need her most.”
Several Democrats, including activist Jordan Wood, oysterman Graham Platner, and brewery owner Dan Kleban, have already announced their candidacies against Collins. The Cook Political Report currently categorizes the 2026 U.S. Senate race in Maine as “leans Republican.”
